This is for Kate

August 24, 2007 by Danielle Filed Under: Food, Special Days

who emailed wanting to know exactly what that was on Stephen’s birthday cake. It’s a crocodile.

For any parents out there who might be afraid to let kids choose their birthday cake themes for fear of being unable to produce its likeness in frosting, I say fear not. You can do this.

1.Do a Google image search for “crocodile comic” or “crocodile cartoon” which will find simplistic renditions of your chosen animal or item.

2. Find something like this.

3. Print it and copy it using a pastry bag and your choice of tips. Use a thick white butter cream frosting (canned is great) in your choice of colors. Paste food coloring works better than liquid for maintaining good frosting consistency.

4. Relax. Birthday kids are easy to please and any mistakes you make are totally edible.

Over the years, between Dan and me, we have produced cakes featuring vultures, chickens, parrots, hermit crabs, dolphins, American flags, Tweety Bird, snakes, frogs, Red Sox, Steelers, and Duke team symbols, and … oh well, you get the idea. Try it. It’s a lot easier than you might think.
