2 1/2 cups flour
2 cups brown sugar
1/2 tsp salt
2/3 cup shortening
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1 cup buttermilk
2 eggs, well beaten
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Grease and lightly flour two 8-inch round cake pans or one 13×9-inch pan. Combine flour, sugar, and salt. Cut in shortening until mixture is in fine, irregular crumbs. Scoop out 1/2 cup o fthe crumbs and set aside for topping later.
To remaining crumbs, add baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Mix well. Add buttermilk and eggs and beat just until blended. Spread batter in prepared pans and sprinkle reserved crumbs over the top. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until tests done. Serve warm from the pan.
