A Word for the Month

Begin Again, Gently

Isn’t there is something about this time of year that makes you want to begin again? Even though I’m no longer buying school supplies or organizing homeschool shelves, September still feels like a fresh new start. I want to clean out closets, improve my prayer life, plan healthy meals, return every neglected email, and exercise faithfully.

Perhaps you know this feeling.

Many of us have a habit of making the “hope” of a new beginning feel heavier than it needs to. I am sometimes tempted to imagine that beginning again requires a complete plan and a perfect version of myself. Before long, my fresh start becomes a list of must-do’s. Inevitably, I miss a day, lose momentum, and what began as hope starts to feel like failure.

I am learning to begin differently.

In many ways these days, life itself feels like a new beginning. After 25 years of homeschooling, that part of my work is finished. My youngest children are making lives and plans of their own, and the daily routines that shaped our family for decades have changed. I’m never bored, but I do sometimes find myself wondering what I am supposed to do with new time and new space.

I would like God to hand me a detailed plan, or talking points at least. Instead, He invites me to pay attention. There might be a conversation that stays with me, an idea that keeps returning, or a new kind of work that gives me energy.

Sometimes God’s invitations arrive as a small restlessness, a closed door, or a change we did not choose. We can miss them because, like Elijah on the mountain, we are waiting for certainty. We are looking for God in the fire, the wind, and the earthquake, but He speaks in a “still small voice.” A whisper.

So maybe we don’t need the entire plan. Maybe we only need enough clarity for today, for the next small step. Beginning gently means asking, “What is God inviting me to notice?” and then making room for the answer.

You might mean return to prayer for five minutes each morning. Or call someone whose name keeps coming to mind. Try something new without demanding that it become a “side hustle” or a lifelong commitment. Release a habit or responsibility that belongs to the past.

Being gentle with ourselves means having patience with the way real growth happens. God is not standing over us with a clipboard, measuring our progress. He’s beside us, inviting us forward with love.

Where is God offering you a new beginning right now? This month, let’s begin again. Not perfectly or dramatically. Just honestly, hopefully, and gently.

Time7:30 PM ET

Once a month, we gather online for a relaxed evening of conversation, encouragement, and prayer. There’s no lecture, no pressure, and no need to have all the answers. Just a welcoming group of Catholic women sharing questions, stories, laughter, wisdom, and the grace we’ve found in everyday life.

ONESmallPRACTICE· ✦ ·

One Small Practice

Choose one ordinary moment in your day, such as making your morning coffee, getting into the car, or turning off the light at night. Let that moment become your reminder to pause and pray:

“Jesus, I begin again with you.”

Keep it small. No streak to maintain, no challenge to complete. Just one ordinary moment made into a place of meeting.
