A Word for the Month

Gather What Is Good

October is a gathering month. We gather apples from trees and sweaters from the backs of closets. We rake leaves into piles and begin to button up our homes as the days grow shorter and colder. There is something comforting about this season. The bright abundance of summer gives way to something beautiful. We notice what has grown, what has changed, and what we want to carry with us into the colder months ahead. But we gather other things too. Without meaning to, we can gather worries. We collect small disappointments, unfinished tasks, careless remarks, and anxious thoughts about what might happen next. We tuck them away and return to…
“Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious…think about these things.”— Philippians 4:8

We tuck them away and return to them later. We rehearse conversations. We keep lists of what is gone wrong and what still needs to be fixed.

Sometimes I can carry all of that through an entire day while hardly noticing the good things God has placed right in front of me.

A warm cup of coffee. A text from one of my children. The changing leaves outside the window. A prayer answered. A moment of laughter. A familiar voice. A hug in the kitchen.

These things are easy to miss because they don't demand our attention. But worry? Worry is loud. Grace whispers.

Scripture tells us that Mary “kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart.” She lived with unanswered questions and an uncertain future. Still, she paid attention. She gathered the moments God gave her and held them close.

October is the Month of the Rosary, which makes this a perfect time to practice that kind of attention. When we pray the Rosary, we gather the events of Jesus’ life and hold them with Mary. We return to familiar words and familiar mysteries, not because we've mastered them, but because God continues to meet us there.

This month, let’s practice gathering what is good.

This doesn't require pretending that everything is fine. Some days are hard. Some prayers remain unanswered. Some relationships hurt, and some burdens cannot be set down just because the leaves are changing color.

But even here, especially here, God is present and active. There is goodness to be found, received, and remembered.

You might end each day by asking: What was good today? Where did I notice love? What small grace do I want to keep?

Write down one thing. Tell someone about it. Thank God for it. Let it become part of what you are gathering.

By the end of October, you may find that you have gathered more than you realized: ordinary moments, quiet gifts, and small signs that God has been caring for you all along.

There is so much goodness we hurry past. This month, let’s slow down long enough to gather it.

Scripture to Carry

“And Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart.”Luke 2:19

With Mary

Mary shows us how to receive a life we do not fully understand. She does not rush past what God gives her or demand an immediate explanation. She keeps these moments, turns them over in her heart, and trusts that their meaning will become clear in God’s time. This October, bring the good, the difficult, and the unfinished parts of your life to the Rosary. As you pray, ask Mary to help you pay attention to God’s presence and hold his gifts with a grateful, trusting heart.

    Doing

    Prep Apples for the Week

It’s time for apples! Did you know that if you soak sliced apples in salt water—2 cups of water with 1 teaspoon of salt—for five minutes and then rinse them, it won’t affect the taste, but the apples won’t turn brown? I like to do this and store the slices in a covered Pyrex container in the refrigerator for easy, healthy snacks all week.
