Your Turn: Christmas Shopping

Have you started? Are you done? Are you in a panic?

My amazingly perfect older sister’s Christmas card arrived in the mail today and so I suppose it is now official — it is time to look toward Christmas. Unbelievably, this year I have actually gotten a lot of my shopping done already. I even have great hopes of completing all of it by the end of this week so that I might begin Advent with a clear head. I’ll be broke, but not frantic. There’s always a catch.

I asked you for links and many of you responded. I’ll list some online shopping hints and sites below for your bargain-hunting pleasure. Some of these were sent to me by readers and some have been compiled through my own shopping this year so far. Any codes or discounts are subject to change, of course, so I make no guarantees. Feel free to leave your own thoughts, ideas, tips, or links in the comments and I’ll update this list with live links as needed. Happy shopping!
Many of you wrote and confessed to your ongoing love affair with Amazon.com. It really is a user-friendly site and a convenient way to shop for just about anything you could dream of buying. Free shipping on orders over $25 makes it an especially attractive option. Use my link and you’ll support this site.

Thank you Danielle! I’m happy to serve any of you looking for Tupperware. I am a homeschooling mom of 4 and we use the very small income from this for the occasional pizza or sports camp. I appreciate your business.

Amazon currently has a special promotion on many of their books, CDs, and videos…4 for 3…Buy 4 of these products, get the lowest-priced for free.

Also, the site Mommysavers has a forum for free stuff and special shopping promotions as well as a section for coupons.

Staples.com allows you to design a custom calender and pick it up at your local Staples store (you pay for it upon pickup) At 9.99, it’s about half the price of a Sanpfish calendar.

I don’t know if others will find this as beneficial as I did, but if you spend $30 at kodakgallery.com now through Wednesday, you can get 25% off. I uploaded pictures and then ordered photo Christmas cards and several enlargements for presents. Plus, if you pick the items up at your local CVS, shipping is only $1.49 no matter how much you order.

    Coupon Code: GOBBLE25
Offer expires 11/28/07. Enter coupon code: GOBBLE25 at checkout to redeem. Must spend $30 on products not including shipping and tax. 25% off does not apply to Same-Day Pickup orders, Gift Certificates, Photostamps, Kodak PhotoShow DVD, shipping fees, Kodak Cameras and other Kodak products or services sold through http://www.kodak.com, subscription fees for the Kodak Gallery Premier and Mobile service, or products for mobile phones. I noticed the Catholic coffee on Aquinas and More was Mystic Monk cofee. You can buy direct from their web site as well, at http://www.mysticmonkcoffee.com . I am not sure how the prices compare, but there may be more choices.

Yes, these are real monks in the US, who roast their own coffee. I haven’t tried it yet, but plan to. They have gift sets as well, and some two-handled monk coffee cups. Several of their roasts are fair trade organic, as well.

Also, my in-laws recently bought us some St. Basil Coffee through their church. They are in Latin America and the money goes to helping those in poverty. It is all fair trade, and they only have one roast. It is available caffenated or de-caf. http://www.saintbasilcoffee.com/

I got most of my shopping for out-of-state friends/family done a few weeks ago thanks to free shipping from LLBean.com and almost-free gift wrapping (99 cents per item) from Amazon. LLBean’s shipping is still free, but, alas, Amazon is again charging 4.99 per item for gift wrapping. I tell you: next November I am definitely going to remember Amazon’s great offer, which I am sure they will repeat.

  • Sue B

Yay! Thank you Danielle. This is REALLY helpful!

  • Willow

Great idea for some last minute gifts! Thank you! I love the shirts for girls at Totally Catholic!

  • Lisa

I love the idea of being done by the start of Advent! I never thought about it that way before. My husband gets a bonus check the day before Thanksgiving so we never start our shopping until we have that money in our hands. But I’ve been doing a lot of online shopping this week and am almost done buying for my 3 kids so there’s a good chance that I can be done by this weekend. I bought a bunch of stuff last night at ToysRUs.com and paid with PayPal so I can get a 20% rebate in January. Unfortunately that rebate won’t cover the shipping costs, but they were still great deals. I bought a bunch of books yesterday at Adoremus.com also — they were having a 4 day post-Thanksgiving sale of 15% off and free shipping with a $25 order. I’m sorry I didn’t find out about that one early enough to share it with ya’ll.

  • Allison

Hello all ! Quick comment here regarding Vision Forum : Doug Philips and his organization are ANTI-CATHOLIC !

  • Diane

I was done until an after Thanksgiving sale offered the wireless video rockers, that I paid one hundred fifty dollars each for , for sixty nine ninety five each. Of course being the bargain hunter I am I returned them and bought them at the sale price. Now my daughter’s gifts amount to eighty dollars more than my sons’ so it is back to shopping. In the past I have always been done by advent so hopefully it will all work out. Even if it doesn’t I rarely stress over Christmas gift shopping. Decorating, cleaning and cooking dinner for my extended family, however are a different story.

  • Sue B

Free shipping for Christmas for Melissa Dayton’s beautiful "Escort to God" poster. See details and other beautiful works of art at http//:pearlsofgracefineart.com. There are also Christmas ornaments.

For those of us who are done…how about thinking WAY ahead & taking advantage of some of these sales & putting these items away (in a safe place like a tote in your closet!) for NEXT year!? The beauty of this is that it almost guarantees you will be done before the start of Advent…I LOVE having this "extra" week in between Thanksgiving & Advent b/c it’s helping me to relax after Thanksgiving & really prepare in a calm way for the start of Advent, Jesse Tree making (we do something new every year), prayer planning, etc. Just a thought b/c I know having gifts in house good & early (and wrapped as they arrive!), helps me to relax about it all & really enjoy the stillness & holiness of Advent. God bless!!!

  • Tina

What? Nobody mentioned what a great gift idea Faith & Family magazine (www.faithandfamilymag.com) would be? I just thought of it now, probably for my sister-in-law (and her family. Hope she’s not reading this). Only $17.95.

  • Usborne Books – the books kids love to read! Check out these amazing, award-winning, educational books from Usborne! We are the leading publisher of children’s educational books. With over 1400 titles, 80% of which are all $10 or less, and the books range in age from birth through high school!

Guaranteed delivery in time for Christmas when ordered by December 12th. Contact Bethany with any questions.

Check out our top sellers like: There’s a Mouse About the House, I Can Draw Animals, See Inside Your Body, and so much more.

My hubby is a Catholic musician so I try to support other Catholic artists. Looking for Catholic Music? Try catholicmusic.com. Great gifts for choir members and friends and family. Lots of variety.

I’ve also done gift certificate to National Catholic Register for my dad.

Food for the Poor is great for charity donation type gifts in all price ranges.

  • Ian

I forgot to mention that Aquinas and More has free standard shipping on US orders over $55 all the time as well.

  • My favorite store Target and their website http://www.target.com get most of our business. I’ll even forgive them for the aquadots on the day after Thanksgiving ad because I find such great deals online (very frequently there are free shipping offers).

  • Jen

oops, I typed the address wrong. It’s catholicmusicnetwork.com. That’s what happens when you’re pregnant and have four kids hovering around–no brain power leftover. UGH!

  • Mary

PayPal.com is running a promotion in which they are refunding 20% of purchases from certain merchants.
What could be more special than having a Mass said for a friend, loved one, religious ed teacher or even your pastor – all the while helping missionary work? For only a $5 stipend/donation, too!!! You may also choose to enroll someone in the association too – something Solanus Casey very much promoted. http://www.seraphicmass.org/
Bluemud.com for very inexpensive sterling silver
Our Lady’s Rosary Makers (www.olrm.org/ ) is an apostolate group that has rosary making supplies at great prices. The cord rosaries are to be made to distribute free of cost – great activity for the family as an advent activity – but you could get the supplies to make an heirloom rosary for someone special on your list. Much more reasonably priced than Lewis & Co. rosary supplies – and you’re supporting an apostolate
