Apple Cranberry Scones

2 cups flour
2 1/2 tsp baking powder
2 tablespoons sugar
1 tsp salt
1/4 cup vegetable shortening
1/4 cup dried apple and cranberry bits
1/2 cup milk
1 egg, slightly beaten

Glaze: 2 tablespoons milk, 2 teaspoons sugar

Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Use an ungreased baking sheet. Combine the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt in a mixing bowl. Stir well with fork. Add the shortening and cut in until mixture looks like fresh bread crumbs. Stir in dried fruit and then the milk and egg. Mix only until dry ingredients are moistened. gather dough in a ball and press so it holds together.

Lightly dust a surface with flour and turn the dough out onto the surface. Knead lightly about 12 times. Pat dough into a circle 1/2 inch thick. Brush milk over dough and sprinkle evenly wit the sugar. Cut into 12 pie-shaped pieces. Place 1 inch apart on baking sheet. Bake 10-12 minutes or until tops are golden brown. Serve warm with butter and jam.
