Chocolate Cure
Dark chocolate can decrease blood pressure. A 6 week study shows that eating the equivalent of about the portion size of 1 1/2 Special Dark Hershey’s Kisses daily increases blood levels of S-nitrosoglutathione (which relaxes blood vessels). So go ahead and enjoy dark chocolate (moderately)!
Vitamin C for Your Mouth
Want to keep your mouth healthy? A recent study shows increased mouth health among those who eat plenty of oranges and other high vitamin C foods. The key is to eat the vitamin-rich foods, though — No benefit was found using vitamin C supplements.
Better Burgers
We all like ground beef. It is easy to cook and you can make lots of different dishes with it. To lower the fat in ground beef, look for “% lean” designations on labels rather than relying on particular cuts of meat or words such as organic, natural, and lite. Look for 95-97% lean. If you must buy the fattier meats, you can always use the old paper towel blot method. Let the cooked beef sit on paper towel for 30 seconds then place on fresh paper towel for another 30 seconds. In recipes such as meatloaf and other casseroles where you can’t blot the ground beef try to use only 95-97% lean beef.
