Requiem

[I found an old photo of Kateri and her beloved pet Speckly on my computer recently and posted it on Facebook. Seeing it made a friend recall and request this old column of mine about the two of them. So here it is.]

It finally happened. I was dreading this day. Speckly is dead.

For those who didn’t have the pleasure of meeting her while she was alive, I should

Spoiled Chicken

Her “people” make her dandelion necklaces.

When she tires of the glamour, she’ll probably eat it.

Jonathan in the Morning

Near as I can figure, this fellow thinks that morning begins right around 3:30 am. The other night I heard him crowing his “Good Morning!” crow before I had even fallen asleep.

Smart? Not so much. Pretty? I think so.

Happy Days

Here’s a peek at what we’ve been up to these warm spring afternoons.

Some of us have been feeding chickens.

Some of us have been wondering why we would waste delicious snacks on the poultry.

Some of us have been riding bikes.

And all of us have been ignoring the elephant in our front yard: a giant pile of won’t-go-away snow.

Chicken Q&A

My disclaimer: I am not a poultry farming expert. The information I share here is based solely upon my own experience with our own backyard flock.

Q: Aren’t chickens very messy? Or stinky?

A: I don’t think so at all. I think chickens are actually quite ladylike compared to many other animals. Of course they are animals, so there is going to be some … manure to deal with. My
