NOTES

In this week’s show, in addition to hormones and grocery budgets, we are talking about some simple ways to grow closer to God. As we read in James, “Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.” (James 4:8)

So how do we do that? Well, I don’t think it needs to be as complicated as we sometimes make it. Here are my 4 simple ideas:

1. Morning offering
Give your day to God, at the start of your day, before you even know what good or bad things might happen. Then, cultivate the habit of repeating your “offering up” throughout the day, in moments of joy or sadness. Here’s the morning offering I like to pray, but you can use a different one, or make up your own!

2. Spiritual reading
We all have that pile of books next to our beds — the ones we meant o get around to reading but never find the time. Make it easier to start reading by keeping books where you might have some down time — in your bag, on the kitchen counter, or in the car. And make use of even small bits of time, just a few minutes is better than nothing! Start small, and you will find that time to read becomes much less of a challenge for you.

3. 15 minutes of mental prayer
Make time to talk with God! You can’t have a relationship with someone you never talk to. As Fr. Mike Schmitz suggests, this can be as easy as spending 7 ½ minutes listening, and then 7 ½ minutes sharing your thoughts with God each day. NOT TOO HARD! You can do this.

4. Examen at end of the day
Make it a habit to spend a few minutes reviewing your day at the end of each day. Think of where you did the right things and where you did wrong things. Give thanks to God for choosing the good, and pray an Act of Contrition for where you chose the bad. Resolve to do better and ask for the grace to do better the next day. Then you can sleep in peace!

This week we are talking about 6 things I think people should say more often. The ideas I share are:

1) Thank you.
Not just to show our appreciation and gratitude toward others, but to be more gracious and accepting when someone compliments you. Don’t reject compliments or try to negate them! Just say THANK YOU.

2) I’m sorry.
Good apologies or even just commiseration r the stuff that real relationships are built on. Admit when you are wrong, even when it’ hard, get over your pride, and apologize. You only have improved relationships to gain from it! (Here is the podcast I did about apologies last year: How to Say Sorry Like You Mean It)

3) Hello!
Look up from your phone, stop being so busy and distracted all the time, and truly connect with the human beings God places in our days. Say hello to the clerk at the check out, to others in line, to people you pass on the street, or to someone in your community who might be a new friend for you.

4) You’re great.
Or I love you, I like you, you did a great job, or I believe in you. We all have opportunities in our lives to be more encouraging and affirming of others. Point out the things that others do right or do well and you will be a blessing and an encouragement to them!

5) I need help.
So hard to say this sometimes, isn’t it? Why do we feel compelled to pretend we can do all the things all on our own? Well, whatever the reason, it’s time to stop. You will only wind up angry, resentful, and overwhelmed. Admit that you can’t do it all and ask for the help you need — nicely of course!

6) Nothing.
Sometimes the most important thing you can say is nothing at all. You do not always have to defend yourself, excuse yourself, and explain yourself. You do not always have to have the last word, and you do not always need to share your unsolicited opinion or advice. Just keeping quiet can be a great gift to yourself and others around you. Think before you speak!

This week we are talking about adding movement to your days and form the healthy habit of sitting LESS and moving more, even outside of your regular “workout” times. This doesn’t have to be complicated, and it can have amazing benefits for your health and well-being. Some of the simple ideas we discuss:

1. Take on a DIY project

2. Use a treadmill (or standing) desk

3. Play games with your kids

4. Be inefficient — with your parking, cleaning up, chores, etc.

5. Keep track of your movement

6. Set a timer to remind you to move

7. Walk after each meal

8. “Walk and Talk” or make sure you are moving while on the phone

9. Take on a 60 second challenge (plank, squats, whatever you want)

10. Walk faster! It feels great!

This episode was inspired by this great article: In Praise of ‘Scruffy Hospitality’

This week, we are talking about getting better at hospitality. This is a tough issue for so many women. We worry about our homes or our cooking skills or our children not being “good enough” for company. We stress about how to be the perfect hostess. But hospitality is such a gift to ourselves, to others, and to our communities, that we all should make a little effort to get better at doing it. I share some ideas for beginners and “pros” alike:

1) Just make yourself do it. A lot.
The only way to get more comfortable doing something is to do it a lot. Stop waiting for the “perfect” moment that will never come. Invite someone over this week! Make it a regular thing.

2) Start small.
If you are a newbie and stressing about how to host people, you don’t need to put on a fancy dinner party. You can have another couple over for a game night with snacks, or friends over for dessert and coffee.

3) Let others help.
Sometimes our prime gets in the way and we feel the need to show everyone how we can do everything when hosting an event. Part of community-building, however, is doing things cooperatively. Let others help with the food or with planning or with clean up. You can visit and enjoy each other’s company while working together.

4) Stay within your budget.
Hosting others will be a major stress if you break the budget every time you have someone over. No need to show off. Simple food and drinks, simple decorations for parties are all fine. Be reasonable about what you can afford to do, so you won’t wind up resenting your guests or regretting your event.

5) Don’t apologize.
When people come over and you spend the whole time apologizing for the state of your home, the behavior of your children, the quality of your food. or whatever is making you feel self-conscious. your guests are going to be uncomfortable. Focus on visiting with your guests and let go of the idea that everything needs to be “perfect.”

6) Pray for receptivity.
Receptivity and openness to others is a beautiful feminine gift. Ask for more of it, ask for the grace to be a gift to others with your focus on them and their needs, with your attention to the desires of others, with your interest in their thoughts and ideas. This is how people feel loved. Spend some real time getting to know your guests better and really connecting with them. They will remember your kindness and attention — not the food or the dust on your bookshelf!

NOTES

In this episode, we talk about ways to plan now (at least loosely make plans!) for a fun summer with your family. The tips I share are:

1. Change up your prayer life.
Summer is a great time to shift your focus and switch your prayer routines. Try something new! Maybe consider creating an outdoor prayer space to inspire you and your family members to pray more often during the summer months.

2. Visit a new place.
Summer provides an opportunity to explore new places together. Maybe a new park or a new hiking trail will be a fun adventure for you. Or maybe try a new library or museum. Relaxed routines provide us a chance to try new things that might be fun or inspiring.

3. Assign the chores!
This is so important. You do not want to end up the maidservant of all your solvency children this summer. Make a plan now (even a very basic plan) for how chores and regular work will get done on a daily or even weekly basis.

4. Have a schedule.
This is related to the chore assignments, but have at least a loose schedule of when certain things like meals, chores, quiet time, and exercise are happening on a day to day basis. A relaxed schedule can be fun for a bit, but we all need routine, and having a basic one in place can save your sanity in the long run.

5. Set a goal.
Whether it’s painting a room or tackling a work project, summer is a nice set chunk of time that you might consider spending working toward an important goal of yours. What do you want to have accomplished come September? Make a plan for it now!

6. Ask for others’ input.
Find out what your family would like to do during the summer. Make a master list for inspiration and enjoy crossing off fun things all summer long.

This week, we are talking about stress and ways that we can reduce the amount of stress in our lives, even if we can’t always change the things that cause us stress. Did you know stress is bad for your health? It is! Let’s discuss these simple ways to handle everyday stress and take good care of ourselves, physically and emotionally.

1.Breathe.
Notice your thoughts & physical reactions to stressful situations. Reminding yourself to breathe slowly and deeply can stimulate your body to de-stress and bring your mind back to the basics. Try it! It really works. Deep breaths …

2. Clean (or do anything productive).
So much better than stress-eating is stress-cleaning. Do something that will make you feel productive and be release of energy that builds up when you are stressed. Clean bathroom, wash a car, organize a bookshelf. Whatever you need to do to occupy your mind and body while you are unable to do anything to change a stressful situation.

3. Move your body!
You already know this, but I must say it anyway. Regular exercise reduces stress. You don’t have to sign up for gym class, though. This can as simple as taking a daily walk, especially during times of extra stress in your life. Your body needs a release of that pent-up energy, and exercise is the best way to do that.

4. Find and use a relaxation trigger.
Brew a cup of your favorite tea, change into a comfortable sweatshirt, or sit in a favorite chair. Find something that normally triggers you to relax and then use it, especially when you are stressed, to tell your body “It’s ok to relax now.” This is so small and simple and yet it really works.

5. Get more sleep.
Everything feels worse when you don’t sleep enough. Everything. Sleep deprivation itself is a major cause of stress on our bodies. You may not be able to get a perfect night’s sleep every night, but all of us can take measures to better ensure we get the rest we need. Get yourself to bed earlier or take a quick nap in the afternoon. Find ways to sleep more and your stress levels will decrease.

6. Touch somebody.
Give yourself a dose of those feel-good. bonding and connecting hormones by giving someone a hug. Grab a kid and hug him or your spouse, or ask a friend for a hug. Physical touch is an important way we connect and feel connected with others. Make sure you take advantage of the touch-able moments in your life where you can express affection but also enjoy a little stress relief.
