June 24th, 2005 We have snails. Four of them, to be exact: Slowy, Sparky, Bugle, and our newest addition, Stripey. Kateri has been keeping these slimy, shelled critters in a terrarium for a couple of weeks now. She watches them untiringly. She cares for them like babies. And boy, does she talk about them. “I saw them eating rotten leaves this morning,” she reports cheerfully. “I added some bark in there–they seem June 24th, 2005 Hotel Rwanda is really worth watching. Based on a true story, this film tells a moving tale of one man’s quiet heroism in the face of inhuman atrocity. Some scenes are violent, but not unnecessarily so. A very uplifting story! June 23rd, 2005 I knew I wasn’t the only underhanded parent out there! Here a few of the ideas readers sent in: POUT CONTEST When my older girls were younger, we would have “pout contests”. It would start naturally when one of them wouldn’t get their way and start to pout. My wife and I would joyfully announce “Pout Contest!” We’d start puffing up our lower lips. “Oh, that’s a good one, but June 22nd, 2005 Today I will cup Gabrielle’s pudgy little face in my hands and tell her how precious she is to me even if she has just decorated her shirt with markers. Never mind the ravages of pregnancy, the necessity of wearing dark circles under one’s eyes, and the eternally baby-spit-up-on, toddler-peed-on, jelly-toast-smeared-on motherly line of fashion–I would settle for 5 minutes alone in the bathroom to put on my makeup before going out. Sometimes I can’t even get in there in the first place. Many a Sunday morning finds me using June 20th, 2005 The way I see it, human nature presents a major obstacle for abortion-rights advocates. The fact is, everybody loves babies. At least we girls do, anyway. When I post pictures of babies here my average number of visitors triples for the day and I get flooded with emails from mushy mommies of every persuasion. Flannel blankets, miniature hats, and bitty booties have the power to reduce even the most sophisticated June 18th, 2005 Dear Dad, Thank you for working so hard to feed, clothe, and educate the nine of us for all those years. Thank you for your inspiring example and the gift of faith. Thank you for always making time to answer all of my questions… completely and thoroughly.
