Confession

People make up all kinds of excuses for why they don’t go to confession. One of the funniest ones I have heard is “I don’t have anything to confess.”

By this, I suppose people mean they haven’t murdered anyone or embezzled large quantities of cash. Well, I haven’t committed these kinds of sins either, but I’ll be the first to admit that I am a big fat sinner and I

Second Sunday of Lent: From Today’s Gospel

He was still speaking, when lo, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him. When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces, and were filled with awe. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise, and have no fear.” Matthew 17:5-7

Lord, this week open our hearts and minds.

Just Plain Messy

My high school physics class never made much sense to me. In fact, there is only one thing I learned in that class that still sticks with me after all these years–the idea of entropy or the Second Law of Thermodynamics: Systems tend to go from a state of order to a state of maximum disorder.

Finally. After endless pages of meaningless numbers and symbols and equations, here at

Small Trouble

A couple of weeks ago, at my regular OB-GYN appointment, the doctor took out a measuring tape, stretched it across my swollen belly, and shook her head.

“You’re measuring too small,” she told me.

Maybe I should have panicked. Perhaps I was supposed to grow anxious about the thousand-and-one things that can go wrong in the final months of pregnancy. But I didn’t–at least not right away. As anyone who

Top Dog

Did you see Carlee, the winner of “Best in Show” at the Westminster Dog Show?

She’s a great dog, I am sure, but since I am trying out my new picture-posting capabilities in this space, I thought I would share this picture of the Bean family’s favorite German Shorthaired Pointer, “Number Nine.” The kids have been playing “Dog Show” all day and he’s been awarded a number of prizes.

Straight to the Source

The hens are in a molt and so they’ve been laying fewer eggs in recent weeks. In fact, they’ve slowed down so much lately that we have even run out of eggs on a few occasions–a rare event indeed. This morning, when I used the last two eggs to make Dan’s breakfast, Eamon got grumbly.

“I really wanted to have eggs this morning,” he sighed into the empty refrigerator.

“I

Confessions of a Cake Mix Snob

I used to be a cake mix snob. “Everything Made from Scratch” was the baking motto in my kitchen once upon a time. While I suppose it is true that most things are better made from scratch than from a box, my busy life and growing family have turned this one-time from-scratch idealist into a boxed-mix, ready-made convert. In fact, it’s been weeks since I baked a loaf of homemade
