December 20th, 2004 Well, the tree went up on Saturday. We used to try to be more traditional and put up the Christmas tree just one or two days before Christmas. It took only a couple of crabby Christmas Eves, however, before Dan and I decided that a compromise was in order–there’s only so much activity two people can cram into a 24-hour period before they turn into Mr. and Mrs. Grinch.

December 19th, 2004 “Stir up Thy might, we pray Thee, O Lord, and come; rescue us through Thy great strength so that salvation, which has been hindered by our sins, may be hastened by the grace of Thy gentle mercy. Who livest and reignest for ever and ever, Amen.”
Come, Lord Jesus! Come!
December 17th, 2004 Okay. Today I am going to try to respond to all the moms of one or two small children who praise me and wonder how on earth I “do it” with my six children– after all, they are overwhelmed with just one or two.

She was fond of telling people: “Stay in your own canoe.” Generally, it meant “Mind your own business” and Sybil found it useful in a variety of situations where town politics got out of hand and people tended to overstep their bounds. December 14th, 2004 Last night, Dan stayed up late to watch the end of a football game. As I went to bed alone, I held myself back from telling him that it’s not necessary to stay up and watch the end of a football game. It’s true, though. You can always turn on the television the next morning and see all the scores, highlights, and player interviews over and over and over again.

December 13th, 2004 Happy St. Lucia Day! In Sweden, it’s traditional for the oldest daughter of each family to arise early in the morning on this day. She is supposed to don a white robe with a red sash and a crown of lighted candles before serving the other family members coffee and sweet rolls in their beds. Now, I’m all for tradition and I’d like to honor St. Lucy, patroness of sight
